From 20 Minutes to 5: Ultra-Fast MSK MRI in Daily Practice

About this Video Lesson

In this highly practical MSK session, Prof. Jan Fritz shows how we can move from “classic” 20-minute joint MRI exams to sub-5-minute protocols without losing diagnostic confidence. He walks through the “why” (patient comfort, less motion, more access), the “how” (parallel imaging, SMS, and deep learning reconstruction on modern hardware), and the “so what” for daily practice: real examples from knee, ankle, spine and more, plus honest discussion of limits, artifacts, and workflow impact. The core message: ultra-fast MSK MRI is no longer a future vision – with the right setup, it’s a powerful, everyday clinical reality.

Learning objectives

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Name key clinical and organizational reasons to shorten MSK MRI exams.
  • Outline how parallel imaging, SMS and DL reconstruction enable fast MSK protocols.
  • Recognize typical use cases and limits of highly accelerated MSK MRI.
  • Describe basic workflow and staffing implications of sub-5-minute MSK exams.

Jan Fritz

Jan Fritz, MD, is a musculoskeletal radiologist and Professor of Radiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City. He serves as Section Chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging and Enterprise Director of MRI at NYU Langone Health, where he focuses on advanced musculoskeletal MRI and patient-centred imaging.

He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at Johns Hopkins University (2008–2012) followed by a fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York (2012–2013). Originally trained in medicine in Germany (MD, 2004), he has since developed an international academic profile.

Professor Fritz’s research centers on advanced MRI techniques, metal artifact reduction, interventional and pain-related MRI procedures, imaging around orthopaedic implants, and quantitative musculoskeletal imaging. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and is widely cited in the fields of musculoskeletal imaging and MRI technology.
