DGMSR Rheuma Day 2025:

Radiology Focussing On Rheumatic Diseases

March 21, 2025, is all about rheumatism. The German Society for Musculoskeletal Radiology (DGMSR) is hosting the upcoming DGMSR Rheuma Day.

Periosteal Changes: Arthritis & More

Focussing On Rheumatic Diseases

Rheumatism is a broad term with many faces. For people affected, the journey to a diagnosis often begins with nonspecific symptoms. In the early stages, conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis may initially manifest as fatigue and exhaustion. Later, flare-ups bring pain in joints, bones, tendons, ligaments, or muscles.

When rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or gout are suspected, multiple medical specialties work closely together, because rheumatism doesn’t limit itself to specific organs. It often impacts several parts of the body. Here, radiology, literally, can help to get a clear picture. Imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will make inflammation identifiable. However, at that stage, radiological findings may seem unremarkable at first glance. Only a trained eye will detect early signs, that is, when you piece together all the information at hand to solve the puzzle.

Overview

For the third time, the DGMSR Rheuma Day 2025 invites participants—especially radiologists—to sharpen their skills in identifying rheumatic diseases. The event will take place on March 21, 2025, and offers flexible participation options, either online or on-site. Building on the success of previous years, this practice-oriented intensive course will be conducted as a hybrid event. Please note that the presentations will be held in German 🇩🇪.

The Role of Radiology

Rheumatic diseases often begin gradually and may go unnoticed in the early stages. As suspicion arises, doctors conduct a series of laboratory tests to check for possible autoantibodies, including the genetic variant HLA-B27. In addition, general inflammatory markers like CRP, white blood cell count, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate provide crucial information. These indicators are essential for differential diagnosis and monitoring disease activity once the initial suspicion is confirmed. Imaging techniques play a vital role in accurately pinpointing sites of inflammation.

At the DGMSR Rheuma Day 2025, experienced speakers will share their in-depth insights into various inflammatory rheumatic diseases, including spondyloarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. In addition to joint-related conditions, inflammatory muscle diseases will also be thoroughly discussed. An overview of IgG4-related diseases will shine a light on another fascinating and diverse group of conditions.

Inflammatory Muscle Disease

Participants will deepen their understanding of a wide range of rheumatic diseases and their differential diagnoses. Moreover, technical innovations such as ZTE MRI for visualizing bone and calcifications will be explored. Whether participating online or in-person, you’ll have the opportunity to directly apply and test your freshly acquired knowledge.

Interactive: Illustrating & Internalizing Radiological Knowledge

The event is powered by the BerlinCaseViewer, ensuring an interactive, practice-orientated course experience—both on-site and online. Our innovative learning interface offers a pixel-perfect presentation of selected radiological images, and directly invites participants to engage with the cases. They can choose from a variety of example cases, all annotated and prepared by the organizing team under the scientific direction of radiologist Kay G. Hermann.

Rheumatism in Numbers

Several hundred medical conditions fall under the umbrella term “rheumatic diseases”. It is estimated that about 2.6% of the adult population in Germany suffers from an inflammatory rheumatic disease.

The speakers will showcase both simple and complex cases. Other than with traditional lectures, our hands-on workshops will offer ample opportunities for the participants to engage with the experts. Built-in features of the BerlinCaseViewer, such as multiple-choice questions and the annotation tool “Pin & Comment”, will help participants not only visualize but also internalize the latest advancements in radiology and rheumatology.

For those attending in person in Berlin, we will provide iPads equipped with the BerlinCaseViewer app. Online participants will have access to the interactive case collection through the web app and are able to join the discussion sessions virtually.
