BerlinCaseViewer’s Highlights: 2024 in Review

We have many takeaways from 2024, one of them being: innovation and success are built on curiosity and the joy of discovery—in medicine and beyond. With a passion for pondering and tinkering, the BerlinCaseViewer was launched 10 years ago as a learning app. With ever new learning content and formats, to this day, we are motivated by the desire to ignite the joy of problem-solving and combining ideas. This is also the common thread running through our highlights for 2024.

In medicine, we keep a clear view thanks to Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, who made a groundbreaking discovery. In 1895, on November 8, with a stroke of luck, he discovered the “X-rays” making visible what lies underneath flesh and bones.

With modern techniques like MRI and CT, we can see even more clearly beyond the skin—but one thing remains: it takes a trained set of eyes to properly interpret the imaging findings.

And this is where the BerlinCaseViewer comes into play, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year in May. It all has begun with a practical training tool that we’ve provided on our iPads for participants attending on-site courses. But why limit ourselves to just that, when the BerlinCaseViewer can do so much more!

A Journey About the Joy of Discovery

So, 124 years after Roentgen’s chance find, we’ve made our own lucky catch: the BerlinCaseViewer app. Just in time for November 8, we launched the app in 2019 for iOS devices, after it had been quietly doing its thing as an internal training tool on our company iPads for five years.

Now, the BerlinCaseViewer app is available on all mobile devices. However, there was one small gap until recently: the BerlinCaseViewer for Windows. To make sure you can keep an eye on our special cases and learning modules anywhere you go—regardless of your operating system—we created the BCV Online Academy. Think of it as your learning subscription that works just as easily as your favorite streaming service.

As an interactive and customizable platform, the BerlinCaseViewer infrastructure now supports exciting workshops around the globe—both online and offline. What keeps this story going is a dedicated team of developers and medical professionals, who together create those all-important aha moments time and again.

BerlinCaseViewer Is Teamwork: The Minds Behind the App

The IT specialists Martin Fischer, Lars Hildebrandt, and Razvan Radu teamed up with radiologist Kay Hermann and rheumatologists Joachim Sieper and Gerd R. Burmester to develop the BerlinCaseViewer as an internal training app. In October 2014, this software solution made its debut at an event in collaboration with MSD Germany. To make sure everything looked sharp, we brought in Nikolay Tonkoff as visual communication expert.

As the demand grew, it became clear to us: the BerlinCaseViewer is capable of much more than just handling cases; this app can be a constant companion in medical practice. So, we teamed up with Andreas Dittberner to set up a website. And of course, it needed words to promote our project: that’s where online editor and copywriter Eva Reidemeister stepped in. Since 2019, rheumatologist Denis Poddubnyy has been part of our training sessions, significantly contributing to the success of BerlinFlame GmbH, the company behind the BerlinCaseViewer app.

In an effort to make the BerlinCaseViewer available for Android devices, we’ve expanded our IT team with Abdul Manan Abid and Usman Liaqat from CodeCoy Technologies. But the story of the BerlinCaseViewer doesn’t stop there! We continue to develop new content and formats to improve your learning experience. The latest additions are the Expert Talks and the BCV Online Academy.

With so many exciting projects, we need a proficient project manager with a tech-savvy mindset to open new horizons while keeping us on track. That’s exactly what Max Kempf has been doing since this year. As we roll out all these new projects, Michael Dabrowski from LP Concept is ensuring we have a clear brand image. This includes modernizing our online presence. On social media, Clara Gabriel is at the helm. The design student has already created fantastic products like the “Roentgen” series for our shop and is also editing the videos for our BCV Online Academy.

What all these individuals behind the BerlinCaseViewer share is a passion for tinkering and creating. It’s this enthusiasm that leads to learning content that inspires medical professionals worldwide and helps advance their careers.

Small and Big Successes We Celebrated in 2024

Our enthusiasm for learning is spreading! The BerlinCaseViewer is gaining strong support from prestigious interest groups and is featured at major events like the ASAS course in Brussels and the EULAR Congress in Vienna as an interactive learning platform.

Of course, we continue to host our own workshops. A standout highlight this year was the Rheuma Day 2024, which took place as a hybrid event—streamed from a conference hall in Germany, hosted in English.

Throughout the year, there were new cases to discover—even during the so-called summer slump, when the scorching heat makes you want to avoid heavy thinking. The “Summer of Cases” provided hot stuff for you to solve during the hottest months.

With 16 cases showcased on Instagram, filled with multiple-choice questions, we created a fun learning opportunity that could be enjoyed anywhere. And the best about this: all cases are now available for free in the BCV Online Academy—ranging from seemingly simple X-rays to complex MRI and SPECT case studies.

BerlinCaseViewer Is Travelling the World

Whether in Brussels, Vienna, São Paulo, or Shanghai—the BerlinCaseViewer has sparked interest and provided insights worldwide in 2024. Our hands-on workshops have been particularly popular, when local experts have brought their own cases with them to analyze together with us. For this, we’re always happy to leave our comfy studio and visit colleagues on-site. This close engagement and fresh case examples open up new perspectives each time, letting us glimpse into areas that might otherwise remain under the radar.

New Formats to Discover

With the new formats of Expert Talks and the Online Academy, we have reached another milestone this year. Our interactive talks offer the opportunity to engage with leading figures in medicine and discuss selected cases.

All Expert Talks are certified by the Berlin Medical Association. The first series launched in October 2024 and will continue until April 2025. Over a total of 12 sessions, participants can collect 3 CME points with each session for their continuing education accounts.

Every session lasts about 90 minutes, consisting of a structured presentation lasting approximately 25 minutes followed by 50 minutes of interactive case analysis. A 15-minute Q&A session rounds off the compact format.

The Expert Talks usually take place on Thursdays at 4 PM CET—perfect for active winding down after a workday. Sounds just like your cup of tea? Then register for a single session or book several sessions in a bundle to get a discount.

The Online Academy, on the other hand, makes radiological education more accessible than ever: simply choose the plan that fits your needs and explore a plethora of case studies.

Laugh And Learn: Make Studying Fun Again

At BerlinCaseViewer, we follow the motto: dig deep, connect the dots—and apply. This principle leads the way, be it in our app or on any other channel where we are present, like on YouTube. Many workshops and case discussions can be found on there, with our channel continually growing in followers. There are also regular longer free livestreams available.

We are all about learning. So for best results, we strive to make it fun. And because a good laugh refreshes the mind, we approach some topics with a pinch of humor, as this case study shows:

One thing is for sure: we at BerlinCaseViewer, together with our international authors, provide exciting content that makes you think and sometimes even chuckle. The fact that we don’t take ourselves too seriously is quite charming, wouldn’t you agree? Here’s to prove that point:

Outlook: What You Can Look Forward to in 2025

In 2025, now that’s for sure, we will maintain our sense of humor and our passion for preparing puzzling cases. There will be many new cases to solve as well as new, humorous merchandise products. Additionally, the Rheuma Day is making a return—this time in German, on March 21, 2025. With SpA Tutor, we are launching a new app that focuses primarily on spondyloarthritis. Furthermore, we too will broaden our horizons and provide a wealth of new content—not just in the field of rheumatology. Sounds exciting?
